Invertebrate Relationships: Patterns in Animal Evolution by P. G. Willmer, This book succeeds in bringing together the previously scattered literature on invertebrate phylogeny, forming a unique introduction to this fascinating and controversial subject. Phylogenetic study is an important corner-stone of biology, for the evolutionary relationships between groups of animals bear heavily upon the analysis of their physiology, behavior and ecology. Until now, there have been few books which analyse the diversity of animal life in terms of its origins and the relationships between different groups. After reviewing the current state of the subject, the author discusses the various sources of evidence which bear upon the question of how living animals are related to each other. Then, these lines of evidence are applied to particular groups of invertebrates. The prevalence of convergent evolution is a strong theme, as it becomes clear that many features, from details of cell chemistry and structure to overall body plan and life history, have been invented repeatedly and independently under similar selection pressures. Pat Willmer has drawn upon her experience teaching invertebrate zoology to undergraduates at Cambridge and Oxford to produce a stimulating, meaningful account of the relationships between invertebrate phyla and of the phylogenetic pattern of the animal kingdom.
Karen Pryor - Karen Pryor is an author and a scientist with an international reputation in the fields of marine mammal biology and behavioral psychology. Through her work with dolphins in the 1960s, she pioneered modern, force-free animal training methods, and became an authority on applied operant conditioning—the art and science of changing behavior with positive reinforcement. Lek (animal behavior) - A lek (from Swedish lek, a noun which typically denotes pleasurable and less rule-bound games and activities) is a tournament (the males of certain species of animals for the purposes of competitive mating display), held before and during the breeding season, day after day, when the same group of males meet at a traditional place and take up the same individual positions on an arena, each occupying and defending a ... Institute of Biosciences and Technology (IBT) - Institute of Biosciences and Technology (IBT), part of the Texas A&M University System, is located in the world's largest medical center, the Texas Medical Center, in Houston, Texas. The Institute's scientists conduct interdisciplinary research with a focus on animal biotechnology, animal genetics, arthritis and bone diseases, cancer biology and nutrition, crop biotechnology, genome research, informatics, advanced invertebrate molecular science, macromolecular design, and biotechnology policy and ethics. Donald Griffin - Donald Redfield Griffin (August 3, 1915 - November 7, 2003) was an American professor of zoology at various universities who did seminal research in animal behavior, animal navigation, acoustic orientation and sensory biophysics. In 1938 he began studying the navigational method of bats, which he named echolocation in 1944.
